There are probably thousands of people who entered the year 2011 resolving to leave their sugar dependence behind this year. People who go through life craving sweets and actually indulging in them don’t live happy lives as you might imagine. They deal with extreme tiredness, unstable moods and breakouts of acne. This can be a really troublesome addiction they really need to take control of. Just because this isn’t a drug, itdoesn’t mean that you can take a sugar dependence lightly. Certainly, you may not be able to check into rehab for craving sweets. But it’s still a problem; you still need to really hold yourself to your resolution.
So what kind of plan is likely to work quitting sugar? What you need to do is to not tell yourself that you will completely swear off sweets altogether. That is not likely to work right away. At first, you should probably keep a detailed journal of what times you find that you are craving sweets more than ever. You’ll find before long, there is a certain pattern to when the cravings strike. This is what you need to work with.
Many sugar-dependent people end up craving sweets the first thing in the morning, and also whenever they are thirsty or hungry. The moment a couple of hours pass after a meal, the craving usually strikes. One thing that can usually work it is keeping yourself from ever feeling thirsty. Taking sips of water from time to time can help if you are the kind who feels a little craving for a sweetie or two every time you feel thirsty. Many people also tend to feel a bit of craving for sweets when they are bored. What these people need to do is find a bunch of things to do to keep themselves engaged. Try not to cut yourself off altogether. Instead, try to only allow yourself any indulgence at specific appointed times – say at the end of the day, to reward yourself for having stayed off sweets all day.
When you do indulge, make sure that you don’t go with completely empty calories. Try to work the sugar into a healthy snack of some kind. For instance, you can try a healthy milkshake that’s as sweet as you want. If you wish to, you can make sure that you don’t find yourself around sweets all that much. Make sure that you don’t keep a stock of goodies at home. Whatever you keep at home for your after-dinner indulgence, make sure that it’s a very small cache – good for just one day. You can also take your mind off sweets by exploring new kinds of tastes to fall for. Try experimenting with all kinds of new foods that happen to be healthy for instance.
Brute force never works for something as powerful as a sugar craving. You need to understand the psychology of how your craving works. That’s when you’ll have your success.
